Interaction design task: prepare hotels for an inspection

There is a company ‘HotelRate’. It is hired by hotels to conduct an inspection and find out how prepared the hotel is for the real upcoming ‘5 diamonds’ inspection. The task is to design an interactive report that is given after the inspection to the hotel managers and help the hotel managers achieve 2 objectives:

  1. How good / bad is my hotel? – “How prepared am I for the ‘5 diamond’ inspection?”
  2. What should I do in this last month to prepare for the official rating inspection? – “I obviously can’t fix everything, what should I do?!”

There are 3000 rules that the hotel is checked against. There might be hundreds of thousands of issues reported. So, 1 rule can have multiple issues.

We provide a table view with 2 levels. First level is the rule level. Second level is the issues level. We clearly show severity of the problems. We provide flexibility by enabling sorting and filtering the data. And we show how much percentage is missing for the 5 diamond status.

First we show all the rules that were broken.

How to convert photoshop’s custom shape’s stroke to a vectorized path

You have a stroke on your vector shape. You need to resize the shape. The result is bad, because the stroke does not resize proportionally. Photoshop does not have the feature of expanding appearance, like in Illustrator. So what you can do is save the file as .eps format, open it in Illustrator and then grab the shape from there, with the stroke vectorized! Ta-daa!

One big ZH

Ah, don’t mind me, just fooling around and trying to come up with a Latin equivalent of a Cyrillic letter ‘Ж’ (ZH) I wish people knew what ZH is and i am not mr [Taz-kh]. I am Alexander Tazh! Parking in your garage!

How to use color variables in Photoshop

If you are like me, and you don’t want to update every element in 72 layouts of the app that you are designing, after client’s request to change the colors, then use the color variables.

They will speed up your workflow in over 9000 times.

I researched the tools and techniques currently available, and the best way is to use the Prisma plugin for Photoshop. They have 30 days trial, but then it costs about 30 eur and that’s totally worth the investment!

The only drawback is that it does not support shape’s strokes, but the creators will take care of that soon.

More details in the video:

There is a better and FREE tool for this, it is called Ditto plugin. It is available only for CC 2015, though.

Meetapa — augmented society.

Here is another idea I had in 2013: an augmented reality level for social interaction.

The idea was to have some info about people around you. It would be more interesting. It would be easier to approach people.

The privacy advocates were mad at me, though.

I later found out there actually was a company that developed this kind of technology, that recognized people’s faces and pulled their social profiles. They were bought by Apple for shitload of m$ney.

Tusa — 3D social network

Around 2013 I got an idea of a more immersive social network, tentatively named Tusa (which means Hangout in Russian).

It’s a social network, where your friends would be 3D avatars, based on themselves. It’d be available for traditional screens, in augmented reality and in virtual reality.

Imagine, you sit in your living room. Here is how you would be interacting with a friend in augmented reality:
